Introduction
What does Education Policy mean?
Refers to the plans and strategies for education introduced b the government.
What is an example of the Education Policy ?
Through Acts of Parliament together with instructions and recommendations of schools and local Authorities.
E.g. 2010 Academies Act- all state schools became academies.
What are most educational policies a response to?
The following issues:
Equal opportunities
Selection and choice
Control of education
Marketisation and privatisation.
Selection and Choice:
What types of school should we have?
Can parents choose where their children go?
Can teachers select who attends?
Equal Opportunities:
How far do government policies help to achieve equal opportunities for all pupils /
How far do they make the inequalities greater?
Control of Education:
Who should control the schools and the curriculum?
How much influence should central govt, businesses, local councils and parents have?
Marketisation and Privatisation:
Should state schools operate like businesses within an ‘education market’?
Should they be given private companies to run?
