Q

What is a neutralisation?

A

A neutralisation is when the proton on an acid molecule is replaced by a metal ion (or ammonia), forming a salt and water

Q

How do group 2 oxides react with water?

A

(M is a group 2 metal)
MO + H2O -> M(OH)2
Group 2 oxides are therefore basic as they release OH- ions when dissolved

Q

How do group 2 hydroxides react with hydrochloric acid?

A

(M is a group 2 metal)
M(OH)2 + 2HCl -> MCl2 + 2H2O
Group 2 hydroxides neutralise metals
