Elbow Flashcards
(8 cards)
Extrinsic causes of elbow pain?
Cx radiculopathy-age 40-50yo
Gout/RA mc in female middle age
TOS: 20-40yo mc in women
Lat epicondylitis
Most common elbow complain, MC 30-60yo M=F
carpenters/ gripping tools with pronation and supination is very painful dt micro trauma and ischemia to tendons of ECRB
Medial epicondylitis
2nd most common elbow pain although 3x less likely than LE.
Age 30-60 M>F
Common in athletes and carpenters.
Caused by over use of flexor muscles in forearm, micro Raina and ischemia to tendons.
RA
Commonly seen in elbow as 50% that have RA will involve the shoulder.
MC in middle aged women
Typically bilateral and symmetrical
Radial nerve entrapment
MC in females, 30-50yo
This is a compressive neuropathy, most commonly under the arcade of froshe as well as space occupying lesion in fascial bands.
Tell me diagnostically confused with lateral epicondylitis .
Ulnar nerve entrapment
Second, most common nerve entrapment of the arm after carpal tunnel.
MC in males, >35 yo
Caused by repetitive compression by leaning on elbows or prolonged elbow flexion, trauma, swelling, or a fracture.
Associated with holding tools in a position repetitively
Seen in diabetes obesity an autoimmune conditions
Pulled elbow
Most common in children, especially girls, most common left arm
Caused by a sudden axial traction of an extended pronated arm, forcing the head of the radius out of the week, annular ligament and capitulum slipping into the supinator muscle
Olecranon bursitis
Inflammation of the bursa at the elbow posterior to the olecranon process
Ages, 30 to 60 Yo M>F
Causing reduce range of motion, swelling, pain, and leaning on elbows makes the pain exacerbate.
May present as red and hot .
Associated with gout and rheumatoid arthritis
