Elbow Flashcards
(12 cards)
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
Pain over lateral epicondyle - wrist extensors origin
Extensor carpi radialis brevis
Over use
Tendon overload
Longevity of pain - long time can affect the CNS
Sore over lateral epicondyle
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): test
Resisted wrist flexion and middle finger flexion
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): treatment
Education
Reassurance
Reload pain free - isometrics
Does take time to get better
Progress to different pronation and supination
Lateral differential diagnosis
Posterior interosseous nerve syndrome - pain and weakness in thumb and finger extension, wrist and finger drop
Rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Intra-articular pathology - clicking, locking
Radial tunnel syndrome - nerves, worse at night, sharp pain
Cervical vertebrae referred pain or radiculopathy
Instability - trauma, dislocation, stress MCL
Non specific arm pain
Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis)
Pain over the medial epicondyle - wrist flexors origin
Over use
Tendon overload
Longevity of pain
Sore over medial epicondyle
Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis): treatment
Education
Reassurance
Reload pain free - isometrics
Medial differential diagnosis
Medial structures
Subluxation of the ulnar nerve
Snapping triceps - 90 degrees flex; ulnar nerve, over 90 degrees flex; medial head of triceps
If the triceps snaps then it will irritate the ulnar nerve
Thrower’s elbow - shoulder, more load on the elbow
Distal biceps
Tendinopathy
Distal biceps rupture - eccentric force in flexed position load on the tendon
Hook test
MOI
Past medical history - steroid use
Other conditions of the elbow/ forearm: Arthropathy
E.g. osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout
Other conditions of the elbow/ forearm: traumatic injuries
E.g. fractures, dislocation, stiffen up after trauma, so need to start moving the joint
Other conditions of the elbow/ forearm: Olecranon bursitis
Swelling
Redness
Soreness
Other conditions of the elbow/ forearm: young elbow pain
