Electricity Flashcards
(38 cards)
What are the two types of charge?
Positive and negative.
What cause a negative charge?
The presence of electrons.
What are some examples of good conductors?
Copper, aluminium, steel and graphite.
Is it fair to say that ALL metals are electrical conductors?
Yes!
What are some examples of insulators?
Plastic, wood, glass, and rubber.
Why are conductors able to carry charge?
Because they have free electrons which can move to carry the charge.
Are there any free electrons inn insulators?
No!
What is conventional current?
Flow from the POSITIVE to the NEGATIVE terminal.
What is electron flow?
Flow from the NEGATIVE to the POSITIVE terminal.
A collection of two or more cells is known as a what?
A battery.
What is a switch used for?
To create an ARTIFICIAL BREAK in a circuit which will prevent the flow of current.
What is a resistor?
A component which will restrict (but not fully stop) the flow of current in a circuit.
What is the difference between a FIXED and a VARIABLE resistor?
A fixed resistor has a SET VALUE of RESISTANCE, whereas a variable resistor is one which you can VARY the VALUE of RESISTANCE.
What does a VOLTMETER measure?
The voltage across a component in a circuit.
Does current flow through a voltmeter? Why?
It possess a very HIGH resistance meaning NO CURRENT will flow through it.
What does an AMMETER measure?
The current through the circuit.
How must an AMMETER be placed?
In series.
How must a VOLTMETER be placed?
In parallel.
What is the use of a lamp or bulb in a circuit.
It is a source of light.
What is a FUSE?
A component which is used to CREATE A BREAK in a circuit if there is TOO MUCH CURRENT FLOWING.
What is voltage?
The energy transferred per coulomb of charge.
What can voltage also be known as?
Potential difference.
What is current?
The flow of electric charge in a circuit.
What is the quote which links energy, potential difference and coulomb of charge?
One volt is the potential difference that would result in one joule of energy being transferred per one coulomb or charge.
