Red Shift Flashcards
When there is a change in frequency and wavelength, what is the name given to describe this?
The Doppler effect.
What does the Doppler effect happen with?
Any wave source that moves away or towards an observer.
If the object is moving towards an observer?
The waves are shifted to a higher frequency and shorter wavelength.
If the object is moving away from an observer?
The waves have a lower frequency and longer wavelengths.
What does the Doppler effect happen with?
Light and sound.
If light from different galaxies is shifted towards the red end of the spectroscope what does this mean?
If means that they are moving away from us and that space is expanding.
What does CMBR stand for?
Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation.
What is currently the only model that explains the existence of CMBR?
The Big Bang Theory.
What do scientists believe about CMBR?
That the continuous microwave background radiation is the remains of the heat energy from the Big Bang, spread thinly across the whole universe.
When did astronomers discover CMBR?
The 1960s.
From what direction does CMBR come from? What temperature does it correspond to?
It comes from ALL directions and ALL parts of space and corresponds to a temperature of about -270 degrees Celsius.
EVIDENCE: The light from other galaxies is red shifted, what is the INTERPRETATION?
This means that they are moving away from us.
EVIDENCE: The further away a galaxy is, the more its light is red shifted, what is the INTERPRETATION?
This means that space is expanding. This supports the theory that the start of the universe could have been from a SINGULARITY.
EVIDENCE: The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, CMBR, exists, what is the interpretation?
The Big Bang is the only models that explains the existence of CMBR. The relatively uniform background radiation is the remains of energy.
