Electricity Flashcards
(20 cards)
Conductors
a material that allows electrical current to flow easily through it, typically due to the presence of free electrons
Insulators
a material that resists the flow of electricity, heat, or sound
Current (I)
the rate at which electric charge flows through a surface (like a wire)
Circuit
a complete, closed path through which electrical current can flow
Battery
a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through an electrochemical process
Switch
an electrical component that controls the flow of electricity in a circuit by either making or breaking the connection, effectively turning a device or circuit on or off
Electron
a subatomic particle with a negative electrical charge
Wire
a thin, flexible metal strand or rod, typically cylindrical, used to conduct electricity or transmit signals
Load
a force acting on a physical system, often a structure or material
Resistor
an electrical component designed to oppose the flow of electric current in a circuit.
Series Circuit
an electrical circuit where all components are connected in a single loop or path, allowing only one path for the flow of current
Parallel Circuit
an electrical circuit where multiple paths exist for electricity to flow, with components connected across the same two points
Voltage
the difference in electric potential between two points
Resistance
the opposition to the flow of electric current in a circuit, measured in ohms (Ω)
Open Circuit
an electrical circuit where current fails to flow
Closed Circuit
an uninterrupted, complete path that allows electrical current to flow
Schematic Diagram
a simplified visual representation that uses standardized symbols and lines to depict the components and connections of a system, process, or object
Ohm
the SI unit of electrical resistance
Ampere
the SI unit of electric current
Volt
the standard unit of electric potential difference
