Electricity Flashcards
(48 cards)
Current
The rate of flow of charge
What is the unit for current?
Ampere (A)
Voltage
The driving force that pushes the current round
What is the unit for voltage?
Volt (v)
1 volt means…
1 joule per coulomb
Resistance
Anything in the circuit which slows the flow down
If you increase the voltage…
More current will flow
If you increase the resistance…
Less current will flow
What does an ammeter measure?
The current (in amps)flowing through the component
Where does a voltmeter have to be placed?
In parallel around the component under test
What current is mains supply?
A.C (alternating current)
What current is Battery supply?
D.C (direct current)
What does a voltmeter measure?
The voltage (volts) across the component
What are the wires in plugs?
live wire
neutral wire
earth wire
Colors of wires in plug:
live wire is brown
neutral wire is blue
earth wire is yellow and green
What does the live wire alternate between?
high +VE and -VE voltage of about 230 V
What voltage is the neutral wire?
0V
Why must appliances with metal cases be ‘earthed’?
To reduce the danger of an electric shock
What is double insulation?
When an appliance has a plastic casing
Do appliances with double insulation need an earth wire?
NO
What safety precautions should you take when using plugs?
check case isn’t missing, cracked or broken
check cable isn’t frayed
check cables aren’t too long
check theres no water near
Earthing and fusing prevents..?
Fires and shocks
What happens if a fault develops in which the live wire touches the metal case?
a big current flows through the live, through the case, and down the earth wire
this surge in current blows the fuse, which cuts off the live supply
What are the advantages circuit breakers have over fuses?
They can easily be reset
