Electricity Test Vocab Flashcards
(33 cards)
Lightning
a visible electrical discharge from a cloud.
Thunderbird
A eagle-like bird that brings the rain and creates lightning from blinking and rain from crying. It is a part of First Nation culture.
Lightning Rod
A metal pole with a wire attached to it that is mounted in the top of a structure. It provides a pathway for lightning to reach the ground without any harm to the structure.
Static electric charge
An electric charge that builds up on the surface of an object
Electrical discharge
When electric charges are transferred very quickly.
Grounding
The process of connecting a charged object to Earths surface
Grounding strap
A metal wire or chain used to prevent static electric charges from building up on vehicles.
Static discharge rods
Needle-like rods on the wings or body of an airplane that disperse static electric charges into the air
Electrostatic precipitators
A filter station device used to remove fine particles from the flowing gas
Fuel cell
A cell producing electric current directly from a chemical reaction
Circuit
A complete path in which electrons can flow; includes energy source, electrical load, and conducting wires
Current electrical energy
The flow of electric charge in a circuit
Load
A device that converts electrical energy to another form of energy
Switch
A device that turns the circuit on or off by closing or opening the circuit
Voltage
The difference in electrical energy between two points in a circuit
Voltmeter
A device used to measure voltage
Electric current
A measure of the amount of electric charge that passes by a point in an electrical circuit in a given time interval
AC
An electrical current that flows back-and-forth at regular intervals called cycles
DC
An Electrical current that flows in only one direction
Ammeter
A device that measures the current in a circuit
Ampere
The unit of electric current
Resistance
The degree to which a substance opposes the flow of electric current through it
Ohms
The unit in which resistance is measured in
Ohmmeter
A device for measuring electrical resistance
