1
Q

What are electrolytes?

2
Q

What is electrolysis

A

Electrolysis is a process in which electrical energy, from a direct current (dc) supply, breaks down electrolytes

Q

Molten lead bromide, PbBr2(l), is an electrolyte. During electrolysis:

A

Pb2+ ions gain electrons at the cathode and become Pb atoms
Br- ions lose electrons at the anode and become Br atoms, which pair up to form Br2 molecules

6
Q

Example
Predict the products of electrolysis of molten calcium chloride.

A

Positively charged calcium ions move to the negative electrode. Here, they gain electrons to form calcium atoms, so calcium is formed at the negative electrode.

Negatively charged chloride ions move to the positive electrode. Here, they lose electrons to form chlorine atoms. The atoms join up in pairs to form Cl2 molecules, so chlorine gas is formed at the positive electrode.

Q

Whether hydrogen or a metal is produced at the cathode depends on the position of the metal in the metal
reactivity series
:

A

the metal is produced at the cathode if it is less
reactive

than hydrogen
hydrogen is produced at the cathode if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen

16
Q

In half equations

A

electrons are shown as e- the numbers of atoms of each element
must be the same on both sides
the total charge
on each side must be the same (usually zero)

17
Q

Name some half equations at the cathode

A

Na+ + e- → Na

Pb2+ + 2e- → Pb

2H+ + 2e- → H2

18
Q

Example
Balance the half equation for the formation of aluminium during electrolysis: Al3+ + e- → Al.

A

The balanced half equation is: Al3+ + 3e- → Al (because three negatively charged electrons are needed to balance the three positive charges on the aluminium ion).

19
Q

Write a balanced half equation for the formation of calcium from a calcium ion, Ca2+.

A

Ca2+ + 2e- → Ca

20
Q

Name some half equations at the anode

A

2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-

2O2- → O2 + 4e-

21
Q

Write a balanced half equation for the formation of oxygen from hydroxide ions.

A

4OH- → 2H2O + O2 + 4e-

22
Q

Write a balanced half equation for the formation of bromine, Br2, from bromide ions, Br-.

A

2Br- → Br2 + 2e-

23
Q

What is Oxidation

A

loss of electrons

24
Q

What is Reduction

A

gain of electrons

25
What does this mean
reduction happens at the cathode oxidation happens at the anode
