Electrolysis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What equipment is used in electrolysis?
Beaker
Electrodes
Wire to join electrodes
Power supply e.g battery
What is an electrolyte
Liquid or solution containing an ionic compound
Why is an electrolyte needed?
Ions need to be free to move
Soluble compounds…
need to be dissolved in water
Insoluble compounds…
need to be melted to make sure all ions are free to move
What are electrodes made of?
Metal or Carbon
What is the point of electrolysis and how does it work?
Splits up by electricity
Battery passes electric current through electrolyte
Negative ions attracted to positive Anode and will be discharged (turns from charged ion to neutral atom)
Positive ions attracted to negative Cathode and will be discharged
Why is a wire needed?
So electrons can flow between electrodes
