How do electric motors work?

A

Magnetic field creates a force on the coil
A DC is passed through a coil of wire located within the magnetic field
Current in the coil interacts with magnetic field, creating a force that pushes the coil, causing rotation
A split ring commutator ensures that force always pushes the coil in the same direction.
