Electrolysis practical Flashcards
Method - Copper(II) chloride
Pour approximately 50cm^3 of copper(II) chloride in a beaker.
Place petri dish over beaker. This should have 2 holes.
Insert electrodes into each hole (carbon graphite) - these must not touch
Attach crocodile leads to the rods and connect to 4V power supply and turn on
Negative electrode (cathode) is being coated in copper
Chlorine gas is produced near the anode
Method - Sodium Chloride
Pour approximately 50cm^3 of Sodium chloride in a beaker.
Place petri dish over beaker. This should have 2 holes.
Insert electrodes into each hole (carbon graphite) - these must not touch
Attach crocodile leads to the rods and connect to 4V power supply and turn on
Hydrogen gas is being produced at cathode.
Chlorine gas is produced near the anode
What is electrolysis
Using electricity to break down ionic compounds
