Electromagnetic Spectrum Year 9 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse waves that transfer energy from source of waves to an absorber
What do all types of electromagnetic waves do in vacuums?
Travel at the speed of light
Name all the waves that form the EM spectrum, descending in their wavelength
Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays, Gamma Rays
How many types of EM waves can we see? Name them all.
1, visible light
Name 2 examples of energy transferred via EM waves and how it happens
Solar energy-Sun emits visible light and infrared radiation that travels to Earth and is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis, converting solar energy into chemical energy
Radio broadcasting-Radio waves transmit audio signals; energy from transmitter travels through air and is received by radios, converting energy back into sound
What can different substances to do EM waves and what does this depend on?
Absorb, transmit, reflect or refract, depending on material and wavelength
Which EM waves have hazardous effects on human body tissues and what does this depend on?
UV, X-Rays and Gamma Rays, depending on radiation type and dosage
Name 2 things UV waves can do to body
Age skin, increase risk of skin cancer
What can X-Rays and gamma rays do to cells
Mutate them
Name 2 practical applications of radio waves
TV, Radio
Name 2 practical applications of microwaves
Cook food, satellite communications
Name 3 practical applications of infrared radiation
Electric heaters, cook food, infrared cameras
Name 1 practical application of visible light
Fibre optic communications
Name 2 practical applications of UV waves
Energy efficient lamps, sun tanning
Name 2 practical applications of X-Rays and gamma rays
Medical imaging, medical treatment
State the equation that relates wave speed, frequency and wavelength
Wave speed = Wavelength x Frequency
