Kinetic Theory Year 9 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Rank the states of matter in order of their density and describe the density
Solid-Most dense, tightly packed particles, little empty space
Liquid-Less dense, particles have only some gaps between them, move freely
Gas-Lowest density, wide spaces between particles, lots of empty space between them
What does density mean?
Measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume
What is the formula for density?
Mass/Volume
What happens to the mass of a substance when it changes state and why?
It stays the same because changes of state are physical changes
What happens to the number of particles in a substance?
It stays the same but the particles themself change their energy or arrangement
What are physical changes?
When a substance changes form but its particles stay the same e.g. melting
What is internal energy?
Energy is stored inside a system by the particles that make up the system
What is specific heat capacity?
Amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree Celsius
What does specific heat capacity equal?
Thermal energy/Mass x Temperature Change
What is specific latent heat?
Amount of energy required to change the state of 1 kg of the substance
What is the formula for the energy of a change of state?
Mass x Specific Latent Heat
