Q

How is the right hand grip rule used

A

putting thumb up and cupping hand

thumb relates to current direction
cup of hand shows direction of magnetic field

Q

How does a solenoid work

A

coils of circular wire is made

one side of wire has magnetic field clockwise
other side of wire has magnetic field anti-clockwise

creates a powerful uniform magnetic field straight through middle

outside is like a bar magnet

Q

What are benefits of electromagnets

A

they are only magnetic whilst we keep current flowing through it

Q

What are the 4 ways to increase an electromagnets strength

A

increase current
increase number of coils
decrease length of solenoid (densest solenoids are strongest)
add an iron core to inside( create induced magnet and increase strength)
