What are some main instrument panel properties?
Positioned in front of the pilot, installed within the pilots normal line of vision. Constructed of light alloy with sufficient strength and rigidity to accommodate the required number of instruments.
Name the 6 basic flight instruments?
Airspeed indicator
Altimeter
Attitude indicators
Direction indicator
Vertical speed indicator
Turn and slip indicator
What are the advantages of a multi purpose display (MPD)?
Smaller, lighter and more efficient, reliable and less expensive.
How are they usually placed on the panel?
Governed by the type and number of engines. Cockpit size may impose limitations as the engine instruments need to be within the pilots scanning range.
Disadvantage of head down display?
Attention diverted from flying and avoiding other aircraft, changing focus of his eyes, tiring and distracting.
What is an Upfront Flying Display (UFF)?
Monochrome light emitting diode display. It displays warnings, cautions and advisories, as well as the status of the communication system.
Name 2 components of the Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS)?
Primary Flying Display (PFD)
Navigation Display (ND)
What is EICAS?
Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System. - Designed to provide all engine instrumentation and crew annotations in an integrated format.
What are the disadvantages of HUD?
Visibility can be effected by sunlight and glare.
What are the advantages of HUD?
Wider fields of view
Navigation, waypoint position, target position, gun ammunition trajectory and weapon release point data.
FLIR onto the HUD so that night vision and target marking is possible
On some aircraft the HUD can be the PFD
What are the disadvantages of HMD?
Weight carried on the head and neck.
What are the advantages of HMD?
Be able to articulate weapon systems with the operators line of sight.
