Element and Compound Flashcards
Element
pure substance that can’t be broken down any further
Group
A column on the periodic table
Period
A row on the periodic table
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific ratio
Mixture
Two or more substances that are together in the same space but aren’t chemically combined
Atom
Basic particle of elements are made up of
Proton
Positive charge, has mass, found in the nucleus
Neutron
No charge, has mass, found in the nucleus
Electron
Negative charge, found outside the nucleus
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus
Family
Elements that have similar traits
Metal
Malleable, good conductor, usually a solid; found in nature as solid form, luster, on the left and in the middle of the periodic table
Nonmetal
On the right side of the periodic table, brittle, dull, exists as a gas
Metalliod
They have properties of both metals and nonmetals, can be shiny but also brittle, they are semiconductors, on the stair step of the periodic table
Chemical formula
Symbols that show the elements in a compound and the ratio of atoms.
