An ELEMENT is a pure substance that cannot be chemically broken down into a simpler substance. These are found on the periodic table and each one has a UNIQUE atomic number (proton number).

A
A COMPOUND is a substance containing two or more different elements, chemically bonded together.

What is a MIXTURE?
A
A MIXTURE is a substance containing 2 or more elements or compounds which are NOT BONDED together.

How can pure substances be identified?
A
Pure substances can be identified by their boiling or melting points. Pure substances have sharp melting and boiling points but impure materials will melt/boil over a range of temperatures.
