Elements, compounds and mixtures Flashcards
(20 cards)
Proton
ve+ charge (positive charge)
Neutron
no charge
Electron
-ve charge (negative charge) orbits around the nucleus
What is created when we chemically fuse Sodium (Na) (shiny grey (not always))+Chlorine (green gas) together
White light and a white solid is produced. The gas jar is no longer green as chlorine gas has been used up. Energy was given out and there was a colour change. There was also light
Compound
A compound is made up of two or more types of atoms chemically joined together (chemical bond)
How can we separate Iron (solid shiny grey)+Sulphur (dull yellow solid) and how can we fuse them together
Use a magnet because Iron is attracted to the magnet and sulphur is not. It gleaned red hot , the product was a dark grey solid. The word that describes a reaction that releases energy is Exothermic. Iron+Sulphur=Iron Sulphide
Fe+S=FeS
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that can exist
Element
Substances that contain only one type of atom
Pure
Substance that only contains one element or compound
Mixture
Substance containing more than one element and/or compound (not chemically bonded together)
What can unequal pressure do to a can
Inside the can when you put water inside and heat it liquid water changes into water vapour (steam) but the air pressure is the same inside and out. When the can is flipped upside down in cold water the water vapour changes back into liquid. There is now unequal air pressure. There is no or little air inside the can so it crushes from the force of air pressure outside the can.
How can we find out whether a gas is Carbon Dioxide
For Carbon dioxide this is the experiment:
The reaction mixture produced a gas so we saw some bubbles in the reaction mixture.
The gases passed through the delivery tube and bubbled into limewater
The lime water changed from a colourless solution to cloudy. The test for Carbon dioxide is: When bubbled through lime water is cloudy.
What gas do we get when we combine Hydrogen peroxide and Manganese
Hydrogen (H) + Oxygen (O) (Hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) and Manganese (Mn) + Oxygen (O) (Manganese Oxide) We could produce Oxygen or Hydrogen. We can not produce Carbon dioxide or Chlorine because there are no carbon or chlorine atoms present in the reactants. Oxygen is made.
What gas do we produce when we combine Zn and HCl
Zinc (Zn) and Hydrogen (H) + Chlorine (Cl) (HCl). We can make Hydrogen or Chlorine. We can not make Carbon dioxide or Oxygen. Chlorine is unlikely to be made because it dissolves in water (it is a soluble gas) and it’s toxic so we would use a fume cupboard. Hydrogen is made.
What gas do we produce when we combine CaCO3 and HCl
Calcium (Ca) + Carbon (C) + Oxygen (O) (CaCO3) and Hydrogen (H) + Chlorine (Cl) (HCl). We can make Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon and Chlorine. It is unlikely that we will make Chlorine as it is a toxic gas and it is a soluble gas. We make Carbon Dioxide.
What do we produce after fusing Magnesium and Oxygen together
Magnesium Oxide = Magnesium + Oxygen
-Releases light energy and change colour, meaning that it undergoes a chemical reaction
- Previously was a Light shiny grey solid
- Became a dull white solid
How does a glowing spill and a lit spill reacy with air
Glowing Spill in Air continues to glow for a while but is then extinguished
Lit spill in air continues to burn but is extinguished once in the test tube
How does a glowing and lit spill react with Oxygen
Oxygen is able to relight a glowing spill
A lit spill burns brighter in pure oxygen than in air
How does a glowing and lit spill react with not pure Carbon Dioxide
It is immediately extinguished
It is immediately extinguished
How does a glowing and lit spill react with Hydrogen
Hydrogen burns with a (squeaky) pop
Hydrogen burns with a (squeaky) pop
