Climax
Greatest point of interest and emotional involvement in the work of fiction
Resolution
Also called the denouement. Final outcome of the work of fiction
Falling action
Parts of the story after the climax and before the very end
Rising action
Related series of incidents in a literally plot build toward the point of greatest interest
Characterization
The act of describing the individual quality of a person or thing
Flat
Lack of interest or emotion; dull / lifeless
Round
A character in fiction whose personality, motives, background, and other features are fully delineated by the author.
Static
A literary or dramatic character who undergoes little or no inner change, a character who does not grow or develop
Dynamic
A literary or dynamic character who undergoes an important change, as a change in personality and or attitude.
Internal conflict
Psychological straddle within the mind of a character
External conflict
Struggle between a character and an outside force such as nature or another character
Point of view
The angle of considering things, which shows us the opinion, or the feeling of individuals involved in a situation.
1st Person Central
First person narrator “I”.. You know they are talking about themselves
3rd person omniscient
There the narrator shows all the thoughts, actions and feelings of all characters
3rd person limited omniscient
Where the narrator shows the feelings, thoughts and actions of a few characters
Tone
The authors attitude toward a subject
Mood
The atmosphere of a piece of fiction, it’s the emotions a selection arouses in a reader
Figurative language
Describing something by comparing it to something else
Simile
Resembles two things using “like or “as”
Metaphor
The comparison of one thing to another without using like or as
Symbol
Signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense
Irony
The use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite then it’s literal meaning
Verbal irony
The use of words to mean something different then what they appear to mean…
Situational irony
The difference between what you think is going to happen to what actually happens
