EM waves And Matter Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is transmission?
When the wave carries on moving once they’ve crossed the boundary, but they may be refracted
What is refraction?
Refraction is the wave changing speed and direction as crossing boundary
What is absorption?
When energy or waves is transferred to the energy stores of the substance they travel into
What is reflection?
Reflection is when the wave bounces back
Why does refraction occur
When there is a difference in velocity of an electromagnetic wave in different substances
Why do materials interact differently with different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum
Because of the difference in the wavelength, some wavelengths might be transmitted. Others may be reflected. The interaction happens, depending on the wavelength or the material of the wave traveling through
What happens when a wave hits a different medium
The different parts of the wave enter the medium at different times hence this leads to a change in speed
What causes the wave to bend?
The difference in speed between the parts of the wave in the first medium, and the parts in the second medium, leading to a change in direction
