Embryology Flashcards
(17 cards)
Does the placenta form from maternal or fetal tissues?
Both!
What structure handles elimination of wastes and gas exchange for the developing fetus?
Placenta
Does fetal and maternal blood mix?
No! Could be incompatible or the blood pressure of mother could hurt the embryo
What is placenta previa and how does it relate to implantation?
It occurs when the embryo implants lower down and the placenta partially or completely covers cervix opening.
What are the similarities and differences between dizygotic, monozygotic, and conjoined twins?
Dizygotic have different DNA
Monozygotic have the same DNA and are of the same sex
Conjoined twins originate from the remnants of the primitive streak and they differ based on how much remnant is left over
What is gastrulation?
It is when the body plan becomes trilaminar from bilaminar
Why is gastrulation an important event?
It is when the three germ layers are produced and where the major axes of the bodies are formed
Formation of the primitive streak, oropharyngeal membrane, and cloacal membrane
What are the germ layers?
Endoderm mesoderm and ectoderm
What adulttissues are formed from the mesoderm?
Musculoskeletal tissue
genitourinary system
Body wall
Membranes that line cavities
What adult are formed from ectoderm?
Neural system
Skin and appendages that relate to external environment. These include eyes and ears
What adult tissues are formed from endoderm?
Foregut, midgut, hindgut
G.I. tract and appendages including liver and pancreas
Respiratory tract
Bladder
The trophoblast differentiate into
Synctiotrophoblast
Cytotrophoblast
The embryonic cavities Are the
Amniotic
Yolk sac
Possibly chorionic
What can be determined by an amniocentesis
Chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections
Obtained from extracting amniotic fluid
Fairly invasive
HCG is produced by?
Synctiotrophoblast
Why might a woman experience bleeding around her normal day of menstruation and still be pregnant?
Blood pools in the trophoblastic lacunae and if too much pools, it gets pushed out causing the bleeding
The extraembryonic mesoderm splits into?
Somatic mesoderm
Splanchnic mesoderm
