Emergencies Flashcards
(33 cards)
Brake failure
Pump brake several times 2 try 2 build brake pressure
If it doesn’t work use parking brake, apply slowly to avoid locking rear wheels, be ready 2 release brake if v skids
If that doesn’t work, start shifting to lower gears & find safe place off rd 2 slow 2 stop
Don’t drive w/o brakes
Tire blowout
Hold steering wheel tight & keep going straight
Slow gradually, take foot off gas & use brakes lightly
Don’t stop on Rd if possible, pull over in safe spot
What should u do/what happens in case of power failure (engine stalling)?
Keep strong grip on steer wheel
May be harder 2 turn but u can w more effort
Pull over, brakes still work but u may have 2 push v hard on pedal
Headlight failure
Try headlight switch a few times
If doesn’t work, use emergency flashers, turn signals or fog lights
Pull over asap
What should u do if ur gas pedal sticks (motor going faster & faster)?
Keep eyes on the Rd
Quickly shift 2 neutral
Pull over
Turn off engine
If about to collide, what can u do 2 avoid it?
Stop, turn or speed up depending on situation
How do you STOP quickly to avoid crashing WITH antilock braking system?
Press brakes hard & keep pressing
Don’t let up, might feel it pushing back when ABS is working
ABS only works w brake pushed down
How do u TURN quickly to avoid crashing WITH ABS?
W antilock braking system(ABS) u can turn w/o braking/skidding. V helpful if u wanna turn & stop/slow
When/how should u speed up to avoid crashing?
If v about 2 hit u from behind or side & there’s room in front of u, speed to get away & slow down once danger passes
How should you deal with skidding?
Stay off brakes, until v slows brakes wont work & will make u skid more
Turn steer wheel in direction u wanna go
As soon as v starts straightening out, turn the steer wheel back 2 neutral/original position
If don’t return 2 neutral steering u can swing in other direction & cause new skid
Continue 2 correct steering left & right till vehicle is moving down Rd under ur control again
What’s #1 important way 2 reduce risk of death & injury in collisions?
Seatbelt
If u can’t avoid being hit from rear, how should u protect urself?
When hit from rear body thrown backward
Press against back of seat w head against head restraint
B ready 2 brake so not pushed into another vehicle
If u can’t avoid being hit from the side, how should u protect urself?
Body thrown towards side ur hit from, air bags r no help & seatbelt needed
Get ready 2 steer/brake 2 prevent hitting smth else
If u can’t avoid being hit from the front, how should u protect urself?
Try 2 turn so it’s a glancing blow @ worst instead of head on
If vehicle has airbag it’ll inflate, it deflates after crash so b ready 2 prevent hitting smth else
Need seatbelt
If u see a collision ur not involved in
Don’t stop @ collision unless ur involved or emergency help hasn’t arrived
Keep attention on driving & keep moving, watching 4 ppl near/in rd
Never drive 2 collision scene 2 look, that can block emergency help
Illegal 2 drive over firehose; can damage hose, injure firefighter or hinder their efforts
What do if someone is injured
Call 911
Don’t move injured ppl unless theyre in burning v or immediate danger of being hit
1st help anyone who’s not already walking & talking. Check for breathing then 4 bleeding
If bleeding, apply direct pressure w hand or cloth, even severe bleeding can b stopped
Don’t give injured ppl anything 2 eat/drink even water
Cover injured w blanket/coat 2 prevent shock via warmth
Reporting the collision how
Gets names & addresses of all ppl involved & any witnesses including injured
Exchange info w everyone involved including name, address, driver liscense #, vehicle info (licence plate, make, model & year of vehicle) & insurance company & policy # if available
Record any damage 2 vehicles in collision
Provide info 2 cops/other emergency officials if requested
If collision involves parked v, try 2 find owner, if cant then leave note where it can be seen w ur contact info & date+time of collision
If collision results in injury, death or $1,000+ property damage & a cop doesn’t report it then u must complete Collison Report form within 4 days
Emergency Notification System (ENS)
All railrd grade xings have emergency # 4 contacting railrd & reporting issues w xing, tracks or train travel
ENS # usually on blue sign on xing posts or metal control box near tracks.
ENS sign also has USDOT # to provide exact location 2 dispatcher who can notify trains 2 stop or b placed on speed restriction. Provide USDOT # 2 911 if emergency help needed
What’s the 1st thing u should do if ur brakes fail?
Pump brake several times 2 try 2 build pressure
What should u do if brakes fail & pumping them doesn’t work?
Use parking brake
Apply slowly to avoid locking rear wheels
Be ready 2 release brake if v skids
What should u do if brakes fail & pumping them & parking brakes dont work?
Start shifting to lower gears & find safe place off rd 2 slow 2 stop
How do u stop quickly to avoid crashing without antilock braking system (ABS)?
V can skid if brake 2 hard
Apply brakes as hard as possible w/o locking them
If brakes lock u skid, quickly let up on brake
As soon as stop skidding push brakes again, repeat till ur stopped
How do u turn quickly 2 avoid crashing withOUT antilock braking system?
Step on brake, then let up & turn steer wheel
Don’t lock front wheels while braking or turn so sharply the vehicle skids
Braking slows vehicle, puts weight on front tires & allows 4 faster turn
What should u keep in mind regarding turning to avoid crashes and your options to avoid crashes?
Usually u can turn faster than stop
Once turned/changed lanes b ready to stay in control, many drivers steer away from a crash & end up in another
Generally better 2 run off Rd than collide head on w another
