What are the 7 characteristics of emotions?

A
  1. Emotions are complex: usually consist of several parts or reactions happening simultaneously
  2. Emotions are authentic: they are automatic, involuntary reactions
  3. Emotions cannot be changed directly: we can change the events that cause an emotion, but we can’t use willpower to stop an emotion or to make ourselves feel an emotion
  4. Emotions are sudden and they rise and fall: most only last from seconds to minutes
  5. Emotions are self-perpetuating: emotions love themselves, they sensitize you to events associated with that emotion
  6. Emotions have components: all interrelated, can change at various points
  7. Some emotions are universal (roughly 10-12 universal basic emotions that are biologically wired for, other emotions are learned and usually a combination of the basic emotions
