Q

What is the antioxidant mechanism of vitamin E?

A

Reacts directly with OH- and prevents oxidant injury to polyunsaturated fatty acids and thiol-rich proteins in cellular membranes
Vitamin E is oxidised to a free radical instead - prevents propagation of lipid peroxidation - referred to as “chain breaking action”

Q

What is the histo pathological definition of EDM vs ENAD?

A

ENAD - histopathological lesions are confined to the brain stem, specifically the lateral accessory cuneate nucleus, the medial cuneate nucleus and the gracilis nucleus
EDM - axonal necrosis and demyelination extend to dorsal and ventral spinocerebellar tracts and ventromedial funiculi of the cervicothoracic spinal cord
