1
Q

What is a cold environment?

A

A cold environment is an environment that is covered in ice all year round. It can contain permafrost, glaciers etc.

2
Q

Where can you find cold environments?

A

You can find cold environments in high altitudes because there is low air particles and you can also find cold environments in high latitudes and low because the sun has to reach most areas but the angle of the sun’s radiation can’t reach high and low latitudes

Q

What does plucking do about glaciers?

A

Plucking is a process of erosion that occurs during glaciation. As ice and glaciers move, they pull away pieces of rock which causes erosion. This steepens the corrie’s back wall.

6
Q

What does abrasion do in glaciers?

A

Rock scrapes the bedrock on the back wall making the corrie steeper

7
Q

What is freeze-thaw weathering

A

Freeze-thaw weathering is when melted water from the glacier is forced into cracks. When it is night, the temperature decreases which freezes the water. As the water freezes it increases by 9%. This forces the cracks widen. This is a repeated process.

8
Q

How does the glacier move inside a corrie

A

It moves in a cycle motion called rotational slip as the glacier can’t go over the hill.

9
Q

How are U shaped valleys form?

A

U-shaped valleys are the result of glaciers moving downhill and ‘scouring’ the earth with friction as gravity pulls the glacier from the top of an elevated area to the bottom. The huge size and heavy weight of the glacier creates a thick, slush-like layer of ice and water beneath the ice mass.

Q

How are V shaped valleys formed?

A

Rivers begin high up in the mountains so they flow quickly downhill eroding the landscape vertically. The river cuts a deep notch down into the landscape using hydraulic action, when the sheer force of the water gets into small cracks and breaks down the sides of the river valley.

Q

What is the consequences of climate change in UK.

A

Water shortage, if pipes freeze in winter or drought occur in summer. The cost of living will increase, such as food, fuel and insurance. Your home may be damaged by floods and gales. Extreme weather may affect where you work, schools and transport links.

17
Q

What are the consequences of climate change for the Maldives?

A

Global warming and rising sea levels are causing warming of the seas and more severe frequent tidal waves and flooding in Maldives. Tidal waves and flooding often contaminate groundwater and sewerage systems leading to disease outbreaks in the country.

18
Q

What features do BedZED houses have to improve climate change?

A

The materials for the house were >35 miles to reduce CO2 emissions,There is a roof vent/ventilation system, plants to collect water for toilets and to absorb CO2,low energy lighting, thick insulated walls,Buildings are faced south and there are triple glazed windows to maximise solar gain, bikes provided and a nearby bus stop.

19
Q

What are the costs and benefits of renewable energy sources?

A

Electricity can be cheaper, more jobs, more reliability, and also a large cost for materials for the sources, etc.

20
Q

Examples of renewable energy resources.

A

Solar energy, wind, falling water, the heat of the earth (geothermal), plant materials (biomass), waves, ocean currents, temperature differences in the oceans and the energy of the tides.

21
Q

What facilities did the Swansea Bay Lagoon have?

A

This will generate electricity by tidal energy, more jobs, lagoon, a centre, education, can be use for Olympics

22
Q

What is a source in a river

A

A river source is the start of a river

23
Q

What is a confluence in a river?

A

Confluence - the point at which two rivers meet.

24
Q

What is a tributary

A

Tributary - a small river or stream that joins a larger river.

25
What are the key river processes?
Erosion, transportation and deposition
26
What is erosion in a river
Erosion is the process that wears away the river bed and banks. Erosion also breaks up the rocks that are carried by the river.
27
What is transportation is a river
Transportation is how the river transports sedimentThere are 4 types of transportation in rivers: solution, suspension, saltation and traction.
28
How does a river change from the upper to lower course? (Long profile)
Hydraulic action and abrasion are the main processes of erosion in the upper course. As the river flows downstream the volume of water increases as many tributaries join the main channel, which increases the river's energy and its ability to erode, so it cuts a deeper channel as it flows downstream.
29
How do you find coordinates in an OS map
Down the corridor and up the stairs
30
What does it mean when contour lines and close together
It is steeper
31
What is solution?
Solution is minerals dissolved in water and carried along in solution
32
What is suspension?
Suspension is fine light material carried along in the water
33
What is saltation
Saltation is small pebbles and stones bounced along the river bed
34
What is traction?
Traction is large boulders and rocks rolled along the river bed.
35
What is deposition?
Deposition is when the river current loses energy and drops/ deposits its load. The deposited material is called sediment.
