1

hormones

are carried by the blood stream, distributed to spicific receptor sites in the tissue of the body

2

endocrine glands

part of the diencephalon of the brain.
controls pituitary glans

3

pituitary gland

occupies the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone
( center of the eyes and around tempral bone )

4

name the 8 pituitary hormones

*vasopressin -released to prevent dehydration
*oxytocin - affects uterus and breast tissue
*TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
*ACTH - stimulate and affect adrenal cortex
*growth hormone - stimulates bone and tissue growth
*FSH - promotes growth of ovarian follicle and stimulates estrogen secreation
*LH - stimulates ovulation and corpus luteum development
*prolactin - promotes breast development and stimulates milk production

5

thyroid gland
location and structure
hormone
functions

L -bow-tie shaped organ in the anterior neck
H- T4 and T3 and calcitonin
F- metabolism regulation
calcitonin - decresses blood calcium
increases calcium in bone

6

parathyroid gland
location and structure
hormone
functions

L - just below the thyroid glad 2 surerior and 2 inferior
H - parathyroid hormone
F- increase blood calcium and stimulates Vit D activation

7

suprarenal
location and structure
hormone
functions

L- sits on the superior end of the kidneys
H - cortical hormone - aldosterone, cortisol, androgens and estrogens
medullary hormone - epinephrine and norepinephrine ( adrenaline )
F- aldosterone- absorbs water affects kidneys
cortisol - increases blood glucose contributes to stress

8

pancreas
location and structure
hormone
functions

L- posterior to stomach, trails off to the left
H- insulin and glucagon
F- insulin - lower blood sugar
glucagon - raise blood sugar

9

pineal gland
hormone
functions

H- melatonin
F- melatonin - affecting circadian rhythms ( sleep )

10

Testies
location and structure
hormone
functions

L- oval shaped, about 2 inches long and occupy the scrotal sac of a male
H - testosterone
F testosterone - stimulates sperm production
responsible for the closure of the epiphyseal growth plate in bone

11

ovary
location and structure
hormone
functions

L- iliac fossa area
H- estrogens and progesterone
F - esterogens - promote follicular development in the ovary
Progestrone - closure of the epiphyseal growth plate, prepares uterus fro pregnancy and maintains lining in uterus
