What is the Endocrine System?
A system of glands that release hormones directly into the blood stream.
Pituitary Gland
Located in the brain. Controls other glands, growth and water balance. Releases growth hormones, oxytocin and ADH (water balance hormone).
Hypothalamus
Located in the brain. Links the brain to the endocrine system and tells the pituitary gland what to do. Controls the release of many hormones.
Thyroid Gland
Located in the Neck. Controls how fast your body uses energy. Produces metabolism (thyroxine).
Parathyroid Gland
Located behind the thyroid, controls calcium levels in the blood. Secretes parathyroid hormone.
Adrenal Glands
Located on top of the kidneys. Help with stress, fight or flight response and energy balance. Produce adrenaline (quick energy in emergencies) cortisol, for long term stress.
Pancreas
Located behind the stomach. Controls blood sugar levels. Produce insulin, to lower blood sugar levels, and glucagon, to raise blood suagr levels.
Pineal Gland
In the brain, controls sleep and produces melatonin.
