What is a hormone?
Chemical that is secreted by the endocrine glands into the bloodstream to be distributed around the body
What is the major gland for regulating hormones?
Pituitary gland
Where is the pituitary gland located?
At the base of the hypothalamus
Do hormones act fast or slow?
Slow
What hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland?
ACTH, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, oxytocin, thyroid-stimulating hormone
What does ACTH do?
Triggers the adrenal glands to produce cortisol and androgens
What does the follicle-stimulating hormone do?
Plays a role in sexual development in both males and females
What does the luteinising hormone do?
Encourages ovulation and hormones needed to support pregnancy
What does oxytocin do?
Secreted during childbirth, encourages attachment between mother and baby
What does the thyroid-stimulating hormone do?
Triggers the release of thyroxine, regulating the body’s metabolism
What hormones are secreted by other glands under the control of the pituitary gland?
Melatonin, Cortisol, Adrenaline, Insulin
What does melatonin do?
Regulates the sleep/wake cycle
What does cortisol do?
Stress hormone secreted during time of anxiety and tension
What does adrenaline do?
Active during fight or flight response to danger
What does insulin do?
Helps blood sugar enter the body’s cells to be used for energy
