Nervous System Flashcards
(22 cards)
What makes up the CNS?
Brain and spinal chord
What nerves make up the PNS?
Cranial and spinal nerves
Where is the cerebral cortex located?
Outer layer of the brain
What is the cerebral cortex responsible for?
Memory, thinking, learning, problem-solving, sensory functions
What are the two sections of the PNS?
Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
What is the role of the PNS?
To transmit messages throughout the body from the brain and relays messages back to the brain.
What is the somatic nervous system responsible for?
Senses - apart from sight
Why is the SNS not responsible for sight?
The retina and optic nerve is connected directly to the brain
What function if the SNS also responsible for?
Reflex arc
Explain the reflex arc
Sensory neuron recognises stimulus, relay neuron communicates this to motor neuron, motor neuron activates the muscle movement
Does the SNS control voluntary or involuntary movements?
Voluntary
Does the ANS control voluntary or involuntary movements?
Involuntary
What is the ANS responsible for?
Receiving and transmitting information from the organs
What are the 2 sections of the ANS?
Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous System
What is the SPNS associated with?
Fight or flight response
When is the SPNS triggered?
When the body is in an alert state
When does the SPNS prepare the body?
When the hypothalamus detects a stimulus that requires attention/action
What is released to fuel physical activity?
Adrenaline from the adrenal glands
What physiological changes does the SPNS make?
Accelerated heart rate, widened bronchial passages, sweating etc
What is the PSNS also known as?
Rest and digest system
What is the PSNS responsible for?
Conserving activity levels and energy to be used later
What physiological changes does the PSNS make?
Slows heart rate and breathing rates, lowers blood pressure, regulates digestion and urination etc
