Endocytosis Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is endocytosis?
It’s the process by which a cell ingests macromolecules, particulate matter, and other substances from the extracellular space.
What happens to the material during endocytosis?
The endocytosed material is engulfed into a vesicle inside the cell.
What is phagocytosis?
A type of endocytosis where large vesicles (>250 nm) engulf large particles; the vesicle is called a phagosome.
Which cells commonly perform phagocytosis?
Phagocytic cells such as monocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages.
What is the size of the vesicle in phagocytosis?
Greater than 250 nanometers in diameter.
What is pinocytosis?
A type of endocytosis where small vesicles (<150 nm) take in fluids and small molecules; the vesicle is called a pinocytotic vesicle.
What does “cell drinking” refer to?
Pinocytosis – the ingestion of fluids and small solutes by the cell.
What is membrane trafficking?
The cycle of membrane movement and recycling during exocytosis and endocytosis.
Why is membrane trafficking important?
It maintains the balance and composition of the cell membrane during substance transport.
