Energy Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define ‘Energy’ and what it does
‘Energy’ is the ability to do work or cause change. It includes moving things, joining things together, heating things up, cooling things down, make noise, make light, and power.
What unit of measurement is energy measured in?
Joule (J)
What are the 2 types of energy
Potential energy and Kinetic energy
Define ‘Potential Energy’ together with the forms of potential energy.
‘Potential Energy’ is stored energy that is ready to go. There are 3 forms of potential energy such as gravitational potential energy, chemical potential energy, and elastic potential energy.
Define ‘Elastic Potential Energy’ and what form of energy is it in relation to
‘Elastic Potential Energy’ involves compression or expansion of elastic objects such as hair ties. The energy is in relation to potential energy.
Define ‘Chemical Potential Energy’ and what form of energy it is in relation to
‘Chemical Potential Energy’ is energy stored within chemical bonds such as batteries. It is in relation to potential energy.
Define ‘Gravitational Potential Energy’ and what form it is in relation to
‘Gravitational Potential Energy’ is potential energy due to an objects position such as a ball being held waiting to be dropped. It is in relation to potential energy.
Define ‘Kinetic Energy’ and the 5 forms of kinetic energy.
‘Kinetic Energy’ is an objects energy in motion. There are 5 forms of kinetic energy:
1. Heat - microwaves
2. Mechanical (movement) - cars
3. Light (radiant) - light bulbs
4. Sound - music speakers
5. Electrical - batteries
Describe the ‘Law of Conservation of Energy’
“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Energy can only be transferred.”
Describe what a ‘Pendelum’ is
‘Pendelum’ is a device that involves mass heading upwards and gains gravitational potential energy.
Define ‘Energy TRANSFER’
Energy TRANSFER is the passing of kinetic energy from a moving object to a motionless object.
Define ‘Energy TRANSFORMATION’
The changing of energy from one form of energy to another form of energy.
