Is the ability to do work
Potential energy
This is stored energy thats waiting to do work such as a coiled spring or elastic band
Kinetic energy
The energy that moving things have ie a windmill turning or a car moving
Heat energy
Heat is energy because it can cause things to move e.g. hot air balloon and steam engine
Light energy
Light can move things in a Crookes Radiometer or in a solar powered calculator, plants use light to make food
Sound energy
If you put your head near a loudspeaker you can feel that air is being moved by sound energy
Electrical energy
Electrical energy can make things like extractor fans move. It is the flow of electrons around a circuit
Chemical energy
This is the type of energy stored in fuels such as coal and oil it is also stored in the food we eat and in batteries
Nuclear energy
This energy is stored in the nucleus of atoms , the energy that comes from the sun
The law of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be changed (converted) from one form to another
Circuits
A circuit is made up of a battery , some wires and different types of equipment and can be used to observe energy conversion
Renewable energy
Constantly being replaced be nature
Renewable energy sources
Solar energy, hydro electric energy, wind energy, wave energy, biomass energy(the use of plants to make fuel) and geothermal energy(metal buried underground heats up),
Advantages of renewable energy
Renewable energy does not cause pollution, they will not run out and they are fairly safe to use.
Disadvantages of renewable energy
They are expensive to develop and set up and more research needs to be done into how to make good sources of energy
Non renewable energy
Can not be replaced and will run out
Non renewable energy sources
Fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas and turf)
Disadvantage of fossil fuels
They cause pollution and damage to the atmosphere
The sun as a source of all our energy
The sun allows plants to make food and heats the oceans and air creating wind and currents
Nuclear energy
When the nucleus of an atom split large amounts of energy are released from it
Advantages of nuclear energy
Nuclear energy can kill cancer cells, sterilise food, produce electricity and it will not run out like fossil fuels
Disadvantages of nuclear energy
The waste products are harmful, the waste products last for a very long time and if the nuclear energy gets out of control huge explosions can happen
