Heat Flashcards
(25 cards)
Solid, liquids and gases expand
When heated
Solids, liquids and gases contract
When cooled
Heat
Heat is a form of energy
Water
Water begins to expand when cooled below 4 degrees celsius
Bimetallic strip
Shows that not all metals expand at the same rate change e.g. Thermostats in heating or an iron
Convection
Heat travels through a fluid ( liquid or a gas ) when the particles move and carry the heat
Radiation
Heat travels from a hot object without the need for a medium, does not need a solid, liquid or gas to go through, will flow through a vacuum
Conduction
Is the method by which heat travels from particle to particle through a solid
Conductor
Something that allows energy e.g. Heat to flow through it e.g. Metal is a good conductor
Insulator
Is a substance that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it easily e.g. Plastic
Air
Is a good insulator, keeps animals warm, is trapped by the fur and helps to insulate the animal
Layers
The hairs on our arms are not very good at keeping us warm, if we wear layers of clothes, air is trapped to keep us warm
Temperature
A measure how hot an object is
Temperature is measured
With a thermometer
We have 2 types of thermometers
Mercury and alcohol thermometers
Melting point
Is when a solid turns to a liquid
Boiling point
Is when a liquid turns to a gas
Freezing point
Is when a liquid turns to a solid
Condensation
Is a gas turning to a liquid
Latent heat
The heat taken in or given out when a substance is changing state without a change in temperature
Latent heat of fusion
Is used when a solid changes into a liquid
Latent heat of vaporisation
Is used when a liquid changes to a gas
Radiation can
A dull, black surface radiates and absorbs heat better than a shiny silver surface
Low pressure
Lowers the boiling point
