Energy 5.3 Flashcards
What are atoms made up of?
Protons, Neutrons, and electrons.
Where are the Protons, neutrons, and electrons each found in an atom?
The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus which is the control centre of the atom, and the electrons orbit the nucleus at the speed of light.
What are the charges of the 3 things that make up each atom?
Proton = Positive charge
Electrons = Negative charge
Neutrons = No charge
What charge does an atom have?
No charge, because the protons and electrons are balanced.
What charge does a positive ion have?
Positive, because there are more protons than electrons.
What charge does a negative ion have?
Negative, because there are more electrons than protons.
What types of energy occur when a spark jumps across a gap?
Light, heat, sound, and kinetic energy.
What powers electrical items?
Electrons power electrical items by flowing through their circuits. Electrical items (when turned on) usually turns into either: heat, light or kinetic energy.
What does an electrical circuit need to work?
It needs an energy source e.g. battery, a load e.g. light globe or buzzer, and finally a conductive path e.g. wires.
