Energy and Electricity Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is Energy?
A source of something that gives the ability of something to work
Can Energy be created or destroyed?
No
What are the 8 types of Energy?
Kinetic Energy, Gravitational Potential Energy, Chemical Energy, Thermal Energy, Nuclear Energy, Electrostatic Energy, Elastic Potential Energy, Magnetic Energy
What is Kinetic Energy?
Any moving object has Kinetic Energy
What is Gravitational Potential Energy?
Any object positioned higher than the ground has this energy
What is Chemical Energy?
This is where energy is stored in substances, which when released can be used
What is Thermal Energy?
Any hot object has Thermal Energy
What is Nuclear Energy?
Any radioactive substance has Nuclear Energy
What is Electrostatic Energy?
This is found in Thunderclouds or charged objects
What is Elastic Potential Energy?
This is seen in any object which is stretched or compressed
What is Magnetic Energy?
A type of energy that a magnetic object has in a magnetic field.
What is the unit we use to measure energy?
The Joule (J) or Kilojoule (KJ).
What are the non-renewable types of energy?
Fossil Fuels, Nuclear Power and Natural Gas
What are the renewable types of energy?
Hydroelectric Power, Geothermal Power, Biofuels, Tidal Power, Solar Power and Wind Power
What is Hydroelectric Power?
A dam traps rainwater which floods a valley, forming a reservoir which pours into a turbine that powers a generator.
What is Geothermal Power?
Uses hot rocks under the Earth’s surface to extract steam, which makes electricity
What is Biofuel?
They burn the plants to release the energy stored in them
What is Tidal Power?
As the tides rise, this powers turbines turning it into electricity
What is Solar Power?
They capture the Sun’s heat and turn it into energy
What is Wind Power?
Wind passes through a wind turbine, spinning it which makes electricity.
Which material conducts electricity better: Metal or Plastic?
Metal
Which material charges up better: Metal or Plastic?
Plastic
What are the positives and negatives called?
Protons (positive) and Electrons (negative)
What moves: Protons, Electrons or both?
Only Electrons
