Energy Study Guide Flashcards
(21 cards)
Energy
The ability to do work.
Force
A push or pull.
Work
Work is done on an object when the object, in response to a force, moves some distance while the force is being applied to it.
Mechanical Energy
The energy possessed by macroscopic (large) particles is called mechanical energy.
Potential Energy
The stored energy.
Kinetic Energy
The energy of motion.
Non-Mechanical Energy
The energy possessed by microscopic (small) particles is called Non-Mechanical energy.
Joule
The SI Unit for measuring energy.
Law of Conservation of Energy
No energy can be created or destroyed but is rather conserved by changing form.
Reactants
The substances that exist before the chemical reaction.
Products
The substances that are produced from the reactants.
Exothermic reaction
Chemical reactions that release heat energy.
Endothermic reaction
Chemical reactions that absorb energy.
Activation energy
A minimum amount of energy required for the reaction to happen, is often required for endothermic reactions
Celsius scale
Based on the freezing (0) and boiling points of water (100).
Kelvin scale
Based on zero being the absolute zero point.
Absolute zero
When all matter stops moving (everything is frozen).
Calorie
A non SI unit that is commonly used to measure the quantity of heat
Calorimeter
A device that is used to assist in the measurement of heat change due to a reaction
Specific heat
The amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1 unit of mass (g) of substance by 1 unit of temperature.
Heat transferred
(mass of substance) * (change in temperature of substance) * (specific heat of substance)
