The Periodic Table Test Flashcards
(22 cards)
Stair Step
The dividing line between metals and nonmetals
Halogens
Reactive nonmetallic elements that are the second farthest column to the right
Noble gasses
A group of rare gasses that are the farthest right column
Alkaline earth metals
Second farthest column to the left
Alkali metals
Farthest column to the left except Hydrogen
Atomic mass
Equivalent to the numbers of protons and neutrons in an atom
Atomic number
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Electrons
- negative charge
Protons
+ positive charge
Neutrons
no charge
Nucleus
The central and most important part of an object
Metals
Fill a majority of the periodic table and conduct electricity, solid except for Hg (Mercury) and malleable and ductile
Nonmetals
H and the right side of the periodic table and are mostly gasses, tend to be insulators and tend to be brittle in a solid form
Metalloids
Surround the stair step and behave like metals under some conditions and like non-metals under others
Inert
Lacking the ability or strength to move
Electronegativity
The ability of an element to attract electrons when the atom is in a compound
Ionization Energy
The energy that is required to remove an electron
Atomic Radii
Measure of the size of its atoms
Ions
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons
Isotopes
Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons, but differing numbers of neutrons
Metal Ions
Metallic ions are generally negative as they gain electrons
Nonmetal Ions
Non-metallic ions are generally positive as they loose electrons
