Energy Transformations Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to change.
What are the five basic categories of energy?
Mechanical energy, Luminous energy, Thermal energy, Chemical energy, and Electrical energy.
What does mechanical energy come from?
It comes from movement.
What is luminous energy?
It is the energy carried by light.
How is thermal energy created?
It is created by the vibration of particles (the faster the atoms in a substance vibrates, the more heat it generates).
What is chemical energy?
It is the energy created through chemical reactions.
What is electrical energy?
It is the movement of electric particles, known as electrons.
What is energy transformation?
It is the conversion of one type of energy to another.
What is useful energy?
They are forms of energy that humans need to meet their needs.
What is waste?
It is energy that is not useful.
What is the goal of using our technology efficiently?
It is to produce the maximum amount of energy that is useful, while producing the minimum amount of waste.
What are renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
They are resources used by human beings to create a desired type of energy.
What is solar energy?
This utilizes solar panels to convert luminous energy to electrical energy.
What is the similarity between wind energy and hydraulic energy?
They both use mechanical energy to turn a turbine.
What is a turbine?
They are machines that turn mechanical energy into electrical energy.
What is the similarity between fossil fuels, biomass, and nuclear energy?
They all use chemical reactions to generate heat.
How is thermal energy converted into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy?
This is by heating water into steam which will turn a turbine which generates electrical energy.
When the chemicals in the chloroplast of plant cells react to luminous energy, what does this create?
Glucose.
What type of energy do batteries generate as they mix or decay?
Electrical energy.
How do rechargeable batteries work?
Some of the chemical reactions that are made by batteries are reversable using electrical energy.
