Systems Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is the first characteristic of a system?
The overall function.
What is the overall function?
This describes what a system is designed to do.
What are controls?
Controls manage what happens in a system. Controls activate functions and can change how a technical object works.
What is a component?
Components have a task to perform inside a system.
What is a system?
A system is when many components work together to complete the overall function.
What are inputs?
Inputs are the things that go into a system to help it function (they are often transformed by the system).
What are the seven different categories of inputs?
People, Equipment, Information, Energy, Materials, Capital, Time.
What are people inputs of?
People are inputs of a system like school or a hospital where workers are necessary to perform a task.
What are examples of equipment?
Screwdriver or smart board.
What types of energy could be used?
Electricity, heat, light, or fuel.
What is information?
Information is often the input a computer will use to perform a task, this could be any amount of knowledge or instructions in a system.
What are materials?
Materials tend to be used up by the system to create something.
What are examples of materials?
Wood, fabric, nails, or glue.
What is capital?
Capital refers to money or anything that is traded for labor.
What is time allocated to in a system?
The time needed to operate, or the time needed to prepare.
What are outputs?
Outputs are anything that is created by the system.
What are the 2 different outputs created by a system?
Results: desirable outputs Waste: undesirable outputs
What is usually the overall function of a system?
The overall function of a system is generally to take the input and create an output.
What are processes?
The actions done with the input to create an output.
What is an example of a technical object?
A clock.
What are the components of a clock.
The hands, a face, gears, a motor, and a battery.
What is the overall function of a clock?
To measure the movement of time.
How does a clock work?
The clock takes the electricity produced by the battery to make a motor turn, this process causes the gears which are attached to the hand to rotate.
What is the control of the system of a clock?
The control is the size of the gears which controls the speed.
