Engery Flashcards
(22 cards)
Kinetic Energy
The energy a moving object has because of its motion.
Potential Energy
Stored energy due to position is called this.
Elastic Potential Energy
Energy stored by something that can stretch or compress, such as rubber band or spring.
Chemical Potential Energy
Energy stored in chemical bonds.
Gravitational Potential Energy
The energy an object has due to its position above Earth, energy due to its height.
Mechanical Energy
The energy of motion, or the energy of an object that moves.
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy is neither created nor destroyed.
Work
The transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object moves.
Power
The amount of work done in one second. It is the rate at which work is done.
Machine
A device that makes doing work easier.
Input Force
The force that applied to a machine.
Output Force
The force applied by the machine.
Mechanical Advantage
The ratio of the output force to the input force.
Efficiency
A measure of how much of the work put into a machine is changed into useful output work by the machine.
Simple Machine
A machine that does work with only one movement of the machine. There are 6 types of simple machines.
Lever
A bar that is free to pivot or turn around a fixed point.
Pulley
A grooved wheel with a rope, chain, or cable running along the groove.
Wheel and Axle
A simple Machine consisting of a shaft or axle attached to the center of a larger wheel, so that the wheel and axle rotate together.
Inclined Plane
A flat surface that makes an angle with the plane of the horizon.
Screw
An inclined plane wrapped in a spiral around a cylindrical post.
Wedge
An inclined plane with one two sloping sides. It also changes the direction of the input force.
Compound Machine
Two or more simple machines that operate together that form a compound machine.
