Motion Flashcards
(22 cards)
How far an object moves.
Distance
Distance and direction of an object’s change in position from the starting point.
Displacement
Distance an object travels per unit of time.
Speed
Total distance an object travels divided by the total time it takes to travel the distance.
Average Speed
The speed at a given point in time.
Instantaneous Speed
The speed and direction of a moving object.
Velocity
The rate of change of velocity.
Acceleration
A push or pull.
Force
Sum of the forces that are acting on an object.
Net Force
Forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction.
Balanced Forces
Tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion.
Inertia
The acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net Force on the object.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching each other.
Friction
Frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other.
Static Friction
The force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other.
Sliding Friction
Opposes the motion of objects that move through the air.
Air Resistance
A force which tries to pull two objects toward each other.
Gravity
The amount or quantity of heaviness or mass.
Weight
The property of the motion of an object traversing a circular path.
Centripetal Acceleration
The force on an object on a circular path that keeps the object moving on the path.
Centripetal Force
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
Strength or force gained by motion or by a series of events.
Momentum
