Engineer Recon Flashcards
What defines a Zone?
Lateral Boundaries
What are the tasks of Zone Recon?
Threat - Find and report forces
Infrastructure - Municipal (utilities, sewage, transpo, commo)
Society - Size, location, composition
Terrain - Obstacles, contaminated areas
What are the engineers for the Commander?
“Eyes and Ears” by bringing both technical and tactical skills to recon missions.
What are the three types of recon?
Zone
Area
Route
What is Area Recon?
Gaining detailed information about a definite geographical area such as towns, woods, or streams - crossing sites.
A town, ridge line, woods, or other features that friendly forces intend to occupy or pass through.
Define Area in Area Recon.
Delineated with a single continuous line enclosing the area, such as an AO.
Similar to Zone Recon, if AO is a large complex or complex urban area, you can delineate the Area with a LD and LOA.
Use graphic control measures that include routes to and within the AO.
What’s the difference between Area and Zone Recon?
Same tasks for each (TIST) but an Area recon is much smaller.
What is Route Recon?
Obtains information about:
Critical terrain features along route/road
Obstacles
Route conditions and trafficability
Enemy Activity
What are the types of Route Recon?
Hasty - conducted to determine the immediate military traffic of a specific route
Deliberate - used when time and qualified personnel are available
What’s required on a route overlay?
Route Classification formula
Minimum of two grid ref points
Title Block
North Arrow
Route drawn to scale
Start and End Point
What are the parts of a Route Classification Formula?
Route Width
Route Type
Lowest Military Load Classification (MLC)
Lowest Overhead Clearance in Meters
Obstructions to traffic flow (OB), if applicable
Special Considerations
What are the variables used in the Route Classification formula for Route Types
X - All weather route. Never closed for weather.
Y - Limited. All weather closed for short periods (up to one day at a time) by adverse weather during which heavy use would lead to collapse.
Z - Fair Weather. Passable only in fair weather.
What markers hows the beginning and end of a road?
“V” Shape on either side at the beginning and end.
What are the types of Bypass
Easy
Difficult
Impossible
What’s a Constriction?
Reductions in traveled-way widths.
What’s the symbol for a constriction?
Looks like two triangles pointed at each other. The width of the constriction is on the the left and the length is on the right.
What’s the limit on reporting underpass restrictions?
Less than 4.3 m
What’s the symbol for underpass?
A “hump” over the route with the width in meters on the left and the min/max overhead clearance if different.
What form is used for Tunnel Recon?
DA Form 1250
What are the types of Tunnel Bores?
Square with arched ceiling
Horseshoe
Elliptical
Semicircular
What’s the symbol for a tunnel?
Semicircle with bypass symbol pointing to the tunnel on the map. On the left is min/max OHC, below is min/max TWW, and on the right is the length.
What’s Ford Recon?
A location in water where physical characteristics of the bottom and approaches permit the passage of personnel and/or vehicles and other equipment whose suspensions remain in contact with the bottom.
Which was the symbol for a ford oriented?
It describes the right bank when standing in the ford and and looking down stream.
What is Ferry Recon?
Site where traffic and cargo are taken across a river or other water barrier by floating vessel.
It’s considered an obstruction to traffic flow.
Must be (OB) on route classification
