Q

resonance

A

major earthquake impact on buildings

2
Q

How can buildings be modified to become earthquake proof/ reduce the amount of damage?

A
  • Change the height of the building
  • Move most of the weight to the lower floors
  • Change the shape of the building
  • Change the type of the building materials
  • Change the degree of attachment of the building to its foundations
  • Reduce slope angle by excavating to create flat ground
3
Q

Why do buildings need to be modified

A
  • Multi-storey buildings can sway, especially towards their tops
  • If built close together, one can crash into another
  • A stepped profile gives stability against lateral forces
  • Non-symmetrical and complex design buildings increase the vulnerability to ground movements
  • Asymmetrical structures will twist and move back and forth = these forces can make them more susceptible to collapse
