A

A

The Antagonist is the character with whom the protagonist comes into conflict. (‘BAD’ GUY)

A

Conflict is the problem or struggle between opposing characters, forces or emotions. (keyword ‘vs’)
Eg. person vs. himself, person vs. nature, person vs. society, person vs. technology, nature vs. nature)

A

Point of View is the vantage point (perspective) from which the writer tells a story. (angle story told from)
1st person = uses “I”; the narrator is in the story
3rd person = the narrator is all-knowing (looking through a window)

Flashback is an incident which takes place in the memory of a character which provides background information.
-when the action is interrupted by a scene from the past

Satire is criticizing anybody/anything by ridiculing them.

A

Personification is human qualities given to non-living things.
e.g. lightning danced across the sky

Define: Simile

A

A simile is comparing two unlike things using “like” or “as”.
E.g. He is as hungry as a horse.
This house is as clean as a whistle.

A

Without using “like” or “as”, a metaphor compares two unlike things.
-saying something is something else for comparison
E.g. feeling blue
her apple cheeks glowed with health

What are Myths?
Myths are traditional stories which may contain heroic acts to explain beliefs about culture or nature. Myth=Greek work meaning "story" -Stories involving the gods of a culture which sometimes explain how things came to be in nature E.g. Jason and the Golden Fleece

What are Legends?
Legends are stories from the past which have a basis in fact but also include parts that are not real. E.g. Robin Hood-The person was real, but not all of the facts of the story are real.

What are Fables?
Fables are stories (usually with animal characters) which have a moral or lesson. E.g. The tortoise and the hare The boy who cried wolf.

What are Horror stories?
Horror stories are scary and dark. | -fearful/frightening

What are Action-Adventure stories?
Action-Adventure stories are stories that are daring and have exciting experiences

What are Science Fiction stories?
Science Fiction stories are set in the future and often have things in it which have not been invented yet (e.g. time machine). E.g. Alien Attack!

What are Mystery stories?
Mystery stories deal with the inexplicable (unexplainable) or secret. -The characters are trying to solve a puzzle that often involves a crime.

A short story is a piece of fiction that has a limited number of words, only a few characters and one theme.

What is a Fairy Tale?
Fairy tales are fantasy (not real/imagination) stories that are written primarily for children. -usually have a happy ending E.g. Cinderella
