Lattice Enthalpy

Enthalpy change that accompanies the formation of one mole of an ionic compound from its gaseous ions under standard conditions.

What does Lattice Enthalpy involve?

It involves bond formation from separate gaseous ions. It is an exothermic change (value will be negative).

Solid ionic compounds

-Stable which arises from the strength of ionic bonds, electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions in the ionic in the ionic lattice structure

-This creates a substantial energy barrier that must be overcome to break down the lattice which is reflected by high melting points

-Lattice enthalpy is the measure of the strength of ionic bonding in a giant lattice.

How can lattice enthalpy be measured?

Lattice enthalpy is calculated indirectly using known changes
