Q

What does Lattice Enthalpy involve?

A

It involves bond formation from separate gaseous ions. It is an exothermic change (value will be negative).

Q

Solid ionic compounds

A
  • Stable which arises from the strength of ionic bonds, electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions in the ionic in the ionic lattice structure
  • This creates a substantial energy barrier that must be overcome to break down the lattice which is reflected by high melting points
  • Lattice enthalpy is the measure of the strength of ionic bonding in a giant lattice.
