Enthalpy and Entropy Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Lattice Enthalpy
A
Enthalpy change that accompanies the formation of one mole of an ionic compound from its gaseous ions under standard conditions.
2
Q
What does Lattice Enthalpy involve?
A
It involves bond formation from separate gaseous ions. It is an exothermic change (value will be negative).
3
Q
Solid ionic compounds
A
- Stable which arises from the strength of ionic bonds, electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions in the ionic in the ionic lattice structure
- This creates a substantial energy barrier that must be overcome to break down the lattice which is reflected by high melting points
- Lattice enthalpy is the measure of the strength of ionic bonding in a giant lattice.
4
Q
How can lattice enthalpy be measured?
A
Lattice enthalpy is calculated indirectly using known changes
