- Why did you decide to become an au pair?
I would like to become an au pair because I like kids, I like being around kids. I think working and living with a host family will help me improve my English and learn more about the American culture.
- What characteristics or skills do you feel are most important to have in order to be a successful au pair?
I fink the aupair needs to be responsible, flexible, easy going, Organized, friendly, being respectful, open mind, on time, fun and funny.
- What types of rules do you think you will have living with your host family (a curfew, no drinking, loud music, cleaning up after yourself, etc.)?
Cleaning up after the kids and myself, no drinking and no listen to loud music, keep the house organized, on time and ask for permission to bring friend over.
- How do you envision the typical American family (lifestyle, personality, busy, two- parent family, suburban house, etc.)?
I imagem an American family living in a big house with a big garden. The parents are busy and open minded They have kids and dog. They like to do barbecue, travel and go to camps on the weekends.
- Describe your ideal host family. How do you see yourself fitting into their lifestyle?
My ideal host family is a family funny, flexible, likes me and follows the rules and I hold we can become great friends.
- Please describe what you imagine your typical au pair schedule will be like (i.e. wake children up in the morning, make them breakfast, etc.)
I will wake the kids up, prepare their meals , drive them to from school and activities, help with homework, play with them, etc.
- If you were at the park with your host child, and he/she fell off the swing and seriously hurt themselves, what would you do?
I will call 911, calm the kid and I call the parents to let them know what happened.
- What would you do if you were placed with a host family and you did not agree with their discipline style?
I will try to fitting into their lifestyle and discipline style.
- How would you handle a disagreement with your host family?
I am a communicative person so I will talk to them about the situation.
- If two young host children were fighting over a toy, how would you handle the situation?
I will try to calm them down, explain why they need to share the toy and find a way to let them play together.
- What would you do if you were driving and one of your host children took off their seatbelt?
I will stop the car in a safe place, tell her why she can´t do it, explain it is dangerous and put the seatbelt back again.
- Most au pairs feel homesick at some point during their program. What will you do to help yourself feel at home while you are in the United States?
I will play with the kids, go out with my host family, make new friends, I will organize my room in a way that make me feel comfortable and prepare Brazilian food to eat.
- Besides homesickness, what other challenges do you think you will have as an au pair and how will you overcome them?
Weather during the winter, because Brazil has a hot weather
