Enzymes In Digestive System Flashcards

1
Q

What is digestion?

A

The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. This breakdown is ped up up by emzymes

Q

What is the use, what is it broken down into, and how you test it’s presence of carbohydrates

A

Energy resource in respiration, sugars, iodine for starch (beige to dark blue) and benedicts for sugars (light blue to green (lowest) yellow for mid and red for a lot)

Q

How is the enzymes released in the mouth and what does the enzyme do and what they are?

A

By the salivary glands, carbohydrates into sugar by the enzyme carbohydrase e.g amylase

Q

How is the enzymes released in the stomach and what does the enzyme do and what they are and what is contained in there and it’s PH?

A

Protein into amino acids by enzyme protease e.g Pepsi. Hydrochloric acid is there to kill germs and the optimum PH is 2

Q

How is the enzymes released in the small intestine and what does the enzyme do and what they are

A

Lipids are broken down into glycerol and fatty acids by the enzyme lipase

Q

How is the enzymes released in the pancreas and what does the enzyme do and what they are

A

Protease, lipase and carbohydrase are generated here but they act and work in the small intestine

Q

What is created and where and where is it stored and how does it get there to help digestion in the small intestine?

A

Bile in the liver is stored in the gall bladder and when needed that bike gets sent to the small intestine with the help of the bile duct

Q

What does the bile do once reaching the small intestine and why is it helpful?

A

It helps break up the a larger clump of fats and lipids into smaller clumps of liquids, thus process is called emulsification, this increases the surface area of the larger clump of fat which gives more access to the lipase enzymes to attack it while also severing the bonds between the glycerol units and the fatty acid creating many soluble pieces which can be absorbed in the blood stream the PH is 8
