Epithelia Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
Tissue types: 4
A
- connective - packaging or supporting fabric
- epithelial -sheets of cells covering body surfaces
- muscle-generates force
- nervous -nerve and glial cells
2
Q
Epithelial tissue
A
- highly cellular
- bind to each other and basement membrane vie adhesions/junctions
- can regenerate
- derived from all 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, endoderm & mesoderm)
3
Q
Characteristics of epithelial tissue:
A
- polarity (distinct cell surfaces)
- free apical surface
- lateral surface
- basal surface attached to basement membrane
4
Q
APICAL-specialisations
A
- microvilli
- stereocilia -similar to microvilli but longer & non motile
- Cilia -hair like protrusions
5
Q
Junction types: (basolateral specialisations)
A
- tight (zona occludens -apical part of lateral domain)
- anchoring
- gap
6
Q
Epithelial cell functions:
A
- protecting
- passage
- barrier
- secretion
- sensation
7
Q
Classification of epithelia
=no of layers + shape of cells at free surface
A
- Simple, stratified, pseudostratified
- squamous, cuboidal, columnar, transitional
8
Q
Keratinised stratified squamous
A
living cells in deepest layers
-outer layers contain keratin= dead
9
Q
Non-keratinised stratified squamous
A
- moist
- has layer of fluid covering outermost layers of cells, makes them moist
e. g. mouth, throat, anus, vagina, larynx, esophagus
10
Q
Transitional epithelium
A
- type of stratified epithelium -bladder etc
- cube-shaped –> squamous (relax to stretch)
